Knowing Meaning

We are leaving for our A Cappella Spring Tour in Upstate New York tomorrow morning at 6AM. In choir today we sang “The Servant Song” before we shared in communion. Before the ENC chaplain, Corey, spoke about forgiveness and how he was sure someone needed to ask someone for forgiveness, I realized how so few of us actually act on the words of the song. It is very easy to feel that you have so much going on in your life that, no matter how much you see someone else going through, we make it all about ourselves and our pain and our struggles. That’s not to say that we should forget about the things we all go through – by all means, no. But it is important to remember that we are not the only ones struggling. There is someone to your left or to your right that is hurting or going through something and you either haven’t seen it or have chosen to ignore it. You could be the helping hand they need to make it through; your words could be the ones that break through their walls and reach them. Sometimes having someone sit next to you, hold you, hug you, cry with you, laugh with you, listen to you, pray with you, talk with you, comfort you, advise you, and just plain love you gives you all the strength and peace you need to get through, even if it is just for one more day. Knowing that someone cares enough to go out of their way to offer you this act of love reminds you that God is there… He’s always there – right next to you…

As we go on tour this weekend, however exhausted some of us may become concert after concert, think about the words we sing when we sing each and every one of our songs, but especially “The Servant Song”. The end of the year brings on a lot of pressure and stress and sometimes hard times and heart aches. Speak the peace someone longs to hear or be the grace that someone has been searching for.

Sister, let me be your servant
Let me be as Christ to you
Pray that I may have the grace to
Let you be my servant, too.

We are pilgrims on a journey
We are brothers on the road
We are here to help each other
Walk the mile and bare the load

I will hold the Christ light for you
In the nighttime of your fear
I will hold my hand out to you
Speak the peace you long to hear

I will weep when you are weeping
When you laugh I’ll laugh with you
I will share your joy and sorrow
Til we’ve seen this journey through

When we sing to God in heaven
We shall find such harmony
Born of all we’ve known together
Of Christ’s love and agony

Brother, let me be your servant
Let me be as Christ to you
Pray that I may have the grace to
Let you be my servant, too
